10/12/11 - Classrooms for the 21st Century, The fifth of a six CEU series.
For all the construction on campus, the typical college classroom may be the space most in need of a makeover. Many higher education classrooms are stuck in the past: rows of desks, an instructor podium, a writing board fixed to the wall. Sadly, the architecture, furniture and tools employed in many college classrooms today are very 90s in design and function. the 1890s, that is.
Last century's classroom design was fine for rote memorization. The 21st centure classroom must nurture collaboration and hands-on learning. The student body is more diverse, and includes more non-traditional students. A whole newer generation, Gen Y, is bringing new tools, attitudes, and learning styles to campus.
Steelcase has studied the learning spaces of higher education: classrooms, labs, libraries and other spaces where learning occurs. We have developed a deep understanding of the classroom and the needs of students, faculty and administrators. Based on our findings and insights, we have developed innovative applications for higher education classrooms that we would like to share with you.
